On Friday morning, May 28, our group assembled in Conegliano.  Our activities began with a walking tour of Conegliano, which covered much the same territory that Charlie and Joan had covered the day before on their own.  Once we reached the summit of the Castle, we were picked up by a minibus which transported us into the surrounding countryside for a picturesque lunch at the retaurant Da Brun, just outside of the town of Rolle.

We enjoyed a most convivial lunch in a grape arbor on a terrace overlooking hillsides full of vines.

After a four-course lunch, the walking began in earnest.  It was hot, and uphill most of the way.  We learned that our route notes were consistently optimistic about both distance and gradations of terrain; "flattish" it may have been in comparison with, say, the Alps, but to those of us at home on the prairie, it seemed awfully steep and tough going.

The scenery was gorgeous!  You can see it was hazy, though, which was due to insistent humidity.  At length, when we had almost reached the topmost part of the day's walk, we (Joan and Charlie, that is) gave in and let the van take us the rest of the way to Follina.
